Scientists have discovered huge ice caves under Antarctica and what they found inside is going to shock you. Some caves are very warm and possibly hosts many life forms that we have never seen before. Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth, though you can stay comfortably in the caves.
The New Discovery
A team of Australian scientists discovered that plants and animals can exist in the caves underneath the Antarctican ice. They managed to bring some DNA sample which partially matches with some other organisms living on Earth. Therefore it is very likely that we could find new species never found before. The cave was found near Ross Island and it is warmed by an active volcano.
The caves are very warm and in some cases, the temperature is around 25C. As a result, you can stay comfortably in the caves while wearing only a t-shirt. That is amazing considering the temperature of the continent sometimes even drops below -50C. There is even light near the cave mouths which sometimes filters through the thin layer of ice. They even think that whole ecosystem could exist in the caves or might have existed in the past.
Dr Ceridwen Fraser, of the Australian National University’s Fenner School of Environment and Society, said: “It can be really warm inside the caves – up to 25C in some caves,”.
The DNA Samples
Scientists took samples from the soil in the caves. The full DNA sequencing is yet to be done but they suppose the DNA matches with algae, mosses and small animals found on Earth. Though they found strong evidence of life it is quite early to think that there could be whole ecosystems under the Ice. Maybe there was an eco system in past and not anymore. More research is needed if we want to conclude anything.
